CSIBER's Exploration of Medical and Psychiatric Settings: A Transformative Study Tour

The study tour at CSIBER stands as an integral segment of the Social Work Curriculum, serving as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Led by Dr. K. N. Ranbhare, our esteemed Study Tour Coordinator, this journey from Kolhapur to Bangalore from 14-20 April 2024 holds profound significance for students pursuing MSW-II with a specialization in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. It offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate dynamics of healthcare settings and gain firsthand insights into the challenges and innovations within the field.

The voyage commenced with a visit to NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences), an esteemed institution recognized as a national center of importance in the realm of mental health. Here, under Dr. Ranbhare's guidance, students were immersed in a half-day workshop meticulously crafted to acquaint them with the nuances of working protocols essential for effective social work practice in mental health settings. Through discussions on case assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and counselling techniques, students were equipped with practical skills essential for navigating the complexities of mental health care. The workshop, enriched with role plays and interactive sessions, provided a holistic understanding of the multifaceted role of social workers in fostering mental well-being.

Continuing the exploration, students ventured into CADABAMS, a reputable Rehabilitation Centre renowned for its innovative approaches to patient care. Here, under Dr. Ranbhare's mentorship, students had the opportunity to interact with individuals grappling with a spectrum of mental health disorders, from Schizophrenia to Mood Disorders. Observing the transformative impact of unique treatment modalities and engaging with patients firsthand underscored the pivotal role of social workers in facilitating rehabilitation and fostering recovery.

The journey further unfolded as they delved into three distinct organizations - Richmond Fellowships Asha, Jyothi, and Chetana - each offering invaluable insights into the landscape of rehabilitation. Guided by Dr. Ranbhare's expertise, students gained insights into the importance of active patient engagement through home-based activities at Asha. Meanwhile, Jyothi Centre's focus on intellectual disabilities sheds light on innovative approaches to rehabilitation, including family therapy and occupational therapy. At Chetana, students witnessed firsthand the transformative power of vocational training in fostering independence and reducing preoccupation symptoms among patients.

These immersive experiences not only broadened the students’ understanding of medical and psychiatric social work but also instilled in them a profound sense of empathy and compassion under Dr. Ranbhare's mentorship. As the study tour concluded, students left Bangalore with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to leveraging their skills for the betterment of individuals and communities. Armed with practical insights and a deeper understanding of healthcare dynamics, the students are poised to embark on their professional journey with confidence and compassion.
